Spun Buns Angora Rabbits
&
Hello, my name is Katie Musante of High Desert Fiberworks and Spun Buns Angora Rabbits. I LOVE my angora bunnies and find they are perfect for my fiber and companion needs. Many years of raising non-fiber bunnies (Dutch, Mini Lop, and Netherland Dwarf) when in 4-H and FFA gave me a solid foundation of rabbit care. However, there are other aspects to consider when you throw fiber concerns into the mix.
With angoras, planning didn't just concern breeding and marketing. It includes prevention of wool block, finding wooler specific feed, scheduling shearings and learning to harvest and grade fiber. I'm not trying to imply these bunnies are difficult to care for, but there certainly are other things to keep in mind when raising them. Learning is a continual process, and it's always interesting to hear other people's experience and perspective. It's interesting how what works for one person, doesn't necessarily work for all.
My interest in Angora rabbits started shortly after becoming a hand spinner. The desire to care for fiber producing animals crept into my mind, and it wasn't very long before the idea of Angora rabbits seemed to fill all my needs. Rabbits have always been dear to my heart, but after finding out how wonderfully Angoras could fill the wooler, pet, and fun categories, it became clear they had multi-faceted appeal. This was the beginning of it all!
I chose the Germans, and German Hybrids, based on much research and numerous factors important to my life and needs. My main desire were bunnies that would produce a large amount of fiber with the least amount of necessary grooming between harvests. A high feed to fiber ratio was also important since my barn space is limited. I didn't mind shearing, so that wasn't a determining factor against Germans.
Of particular interest was the fact that Germans usually stay mat free during their 90 day growth cycle and don't require any brushing. There is a nail trim and bum clip around 45 days that usually takes 5-15 minutes to accomplish. This leaves a huge amount of time for visiting and enjoying my bunnies without having to schedule intense grooming sessions. Some people enjoy that time with their bunnies, but for me, I enjoy interacting with them and their personalities more. Of course this is just my preference. Yours might be far different and it is important to figure out what your main interests are before buying or adopting bunnies.
